The White House is organizing a hacking event

It seems unlikely that the White House would encourage hacking, but the US government has just announced National Civic Hacking Day. The event will be something like the popular hackathon where people compete to find ways to solve problems related to computers and security.

According to the announcement:

National Civic Hacking Day is a call to action for anyone who wants to do something good for their city and country. Leading organizations, companies, and government agencies have come together to make this challenge a reality with the goal of promoting transparency, participation, and collaboration between government and citizens. Civic Hacking Day will feature activities across the country by citizen hackers and security experts.

The event is being held in partnership with  Random Hacks of Kindness and Code for America’s Brigade and is hosted by  Innovation Endeavors' Super Happy Block Party. A number of federal agencies, including NASA, the Census Bureau, and the Department of Labor, will be participating, offering specific challenges to the hackers attending the event.
