The bombshell has exploded: Canonical announces Ubuntu for smartphones

Ubuntu phone

Earlier this week, Canonical announced to the world that something big was about to happen by putting a countdown clock on the main Ubuntu website. The reveal was set to happen today. Ubuntu fans around the world were flocking to the website as time passed to see what the company would be unveiling. However, the website essentially crashed just before the clock hit zero. Fortunately, Canonical announced the event with a press release in London.

As expected, Canonical has revealed that it has developed a touchscreen-based version of its free Ubuntu Linux software. The new version is made specifically for smartphones. As Engadget reports, it was demoed on a Galaxy Nexus smartphone to be shown off at the press event.

Canonical claims that the new version of Ubuntu can be installed on smartphones, computers, and servers.
