This teenager can literally build computers from discarded machine parts. While we would throw unwanted electronic parts in our trash, 16-year-old Jayant Parab is using them to build a new computer!
The teenager lives in the suburbs of Mumbai and has chosen to drop out of school after the 9thgrade and now works exclusively for assembling computers from waste. The fact that he dropped out of school is the result of a vision, “I want to make affordable computers. The computer I have created is from the leftovers from offices, banks and hospitals,” he told Mid-Day. “The screen is similar to the one in operating rooms. It is not a real computer. I used pieces that I found left and right and acrylic for the body, which I cut myself. What you see is the first step towards achieving my dreams,” he adds.
With enough practice and a good DIY guide, anyone can “build” a computer from new parts. But Parab has made it from parts that were useless and thrown away and created the acrylic body himself. The teenager says that the parts he finds are usually “as bad as they can be.” “But I try to modify them, adding new parts and cables. So they become like new. If nothing else, these kinds of computers can be used by families and students who can’t afford to buy a regular one,” Parab claims.
Parab knows which parts are useful, as his father was a dealer in such items. Now his father specializes in sourcing old and useless computers and other hardware from offices, hospitals and schools. This gives Parab ready-made parts for his hobby of building computers. His father does not agree with the fact that Parab decided to drop out of school. “He had no interest in studies and that made me bitter,” he says. But he is impressed with his son’s vision. Jayant is yet to drop out of education entirely, as he is pursuing Std X through correspondence courses at St Teresa High School. Asked about his future dreams, he replied, “I am also learning [ethical] hacking and security systems through computer courses. I want to revolutionize the e-waste industry.”
