Project Argus: An Outlook Plugin for Reporting Phishing Attacks

Project Argus is a recently released Microsoft Outlook plugin that allows users to easily report suspicious or phishing emails to its incident response team.

Developed by Snow Offensive Security, Project Argus adds a button to the Outlook ribbon UI that, when clicked, takes the currently open email and forwards it to a specific email address, typically belonging to the company's incident response team, system administrator, or any other person associated with the security staff.

Snow Offensive Security does not open source the plugin, but distributes it for free.

When downloading the plugin, users must enter the email address to which messages should be forwarded and the subject. Snow Offensive Security says this information will be used to write the Project Argus plugin on a per-download basis.

Project Argus works with Outlook 2010, Outlook 2013, and Outlook 2016 and requires the user to be running Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 or later.

The idea behind Project Argus is not new. Last year, in the space of a week, two different Outlook plugins were released. One is PhishReporter from Josh Rickard, a security analyst at the University of Missouri, and the second is Phish Alert from cybersecurity vendor KnowBe4.

The name Project Argus comes from the Greek mythological figure Argus Panoptes, the all-seeing giant whose body was covered with a hundred eyes.
