The largest financial data leak known as the Panama Papers has been partially attributed to a breach of an email server that occurred last year!

The leak of documents from the Panama-based firm Mossack Fonseca confirms what many have long suspected but had not confirmed: wealthy politicians, businesses, investors and criminals use offshore companies to hide their wealth from the public and avoid taxes.
Bloomberg said the company's co-founder, Ramon Fonseca, told Panamanian Channel 2 that the documents were authentic and had been illegally obtained by hackers.
According to The Spanish, the whistleblower gained access to the huge amount of data by breaching Mossack Fonseca's email server, and the firm had sent a message to its clients explaining that it was investigating how the breach occurred and that it had taken the appropriate measures to prevent something similar from happening again. The firm added that it was consulting security experts to do so.

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), which is coordinating the release of information from the leak, says there are 11.5 million documents and 2.6 TB of data.
The documents were first obtained by Sueddeutsche Zeitung last year, which worked with ICIJ to coordinate their global release.
The leak has exposed the offshore activities of hundreds of politicians and public figures around the world, including Icelandic Prime Minister David Gunnlaugsson, the father of British Prime Minister David Cameron, Vladimir Putin, footballer Messi and many others.
So far, the ICIJ has said that 140 politicians and public officials have been revealed to have been involved in offshore activities, more than 214,000 organizations have been identified along with transactions worth billions.
It is possible that not all of the individuals and companies mentioned in the documents were aware of what was happening, given that the ICIJ notes that banks were behind the establishment of most offshores.
The Panama Papers are the largest data leak in history, larger than that of Wikileaks in 2010 and the NSA in 2013, and the assumptions in the method also differ, as the previous two were made by insiders (Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden), while the current leak came from hacking the email server.
