Artificial intelligence (AI) is destined to slowly become ubiquitous in our lives, but until then, it seems to be helping people. Facebook is the current example of using an AI network to describe photos to blind users.
Your Facebook Feed is likely full of photos and links that your friends have posted. Without being able to see the photos, blind users are left out of a huge part of the social interaction that happens on Facebook.
The company's answer to this is automatic alternative text: a neural network analyzes photos and if they are at least 80% reliable, it understands what is happening in the photo and describes it. It is a big step forward for blind users, although it is still in its early stages and is only available in English and with a limited number of meanings.

Unfortunately, what seems like a big step and very helpful for some users may be an ominous reality. It is known that Facebook collects and quantifies user data and sells it to advertisers. So it is not unlikely that at some point in the future you will upload a photo of a pizza and later see an advertisement for Domino's Pizza.
