You don't need to know code to win this hackathon!

Most people, when they think of a hackathon, imagine nerds with glasses glued to their laptops. Nirman Dave, a freshman at Hampshire College, wants us to also think of writers, neuroscientists, actors, and philosophers!

Dave recently organized the first hackathon where you don't need to know code to participate. Already in the second month of his first semester at college, he was inspired by the idea of a hackathon where programmers team up with people from other departments of his university, and thus quickly gathered a core team of 25 organizers. Hundreds of people from around the world wanted to join, and so HampHack finally became a reality this month! The results were a car controlled by the mind, an app that checks whether an object is recyclable, and many other crazy ideas!

Dave said: “I wanted to do a hackathon for everyone because everyone does things. The idea was to bring together all these different people from different fields, unite them and see what we can get out of it.”

Before he started his studies at Hampshire College, Dave worked for a year at a technology startup where he did hardware but collaborated with people from many different fields to bring the products to life. That was also his inspiration for ’ this unique event that received huge response.

The hackathon had participation from women 53% and men 47%. Additionally, four of the five advisors were women as were three of the five judges. Even the organizing team was incredibly diverse.

Even the categories were diverse. Apart from “artificial intelligence”, “best programming tool” and “life hacks”, the judges also selected winners for “the craziest project”, “the most interdisciplinary project”, and for “the most creative domain name”. By the way, half of the awards were given to women.

A creation that stood out was EdgarAllanPoetry, an AI that tests users' ability to produce computer-generated poetry from the best poets of the English language. Another was MuseInvader, a space invader game that you play with your mind using a headband that detects beta waves. The winner of the “craziest work” was SniffleGiggle, which was inspired by the TV show Parks and Recreation and plays random recordings of spontaneous comments and provocative excerpts when you pull a tissue.

“This is an experiment from something that actually happens in the real world”, said Dave.
