The topic of Internet is always relevant given what we learn on a daily basis about online attacks. viruses, malware, eavesdropping, etc.
Below you will read 10 ways to protect yourself from online dangers.
1. Use different passwords
A common method used by hackers is to get a username-password "pair" from one site and from there try to "hack" the user's other accounts.
It's best to use different passwords for each site/service/social network you're a member of, and without any common characters. We understand that most people don't want to remember dozens of different passwords, but that's exactly why password managers exist.
These are applications on computers and mobile devices [either as browser add-ons or as standalone applications] that store all your username and password combinations under one username and password. Also, some of them [e.g. LastPass] suggest a difficult password for any site you want.
2. Connect to wireless networks via VPN
If you are connecting to wireless networks whose security you are not aware of, then you should connect via a VPN connection.
VPN [Virtual Private Network] is a virtual, private network, with the characteristics of a LAN, to which computers from all over the world can connect, with a highly secure encrypted connection.
Wherever the computer connects from, its connection acquires the characteristics of the VPN base, such as the external IP.
If a VPN is set up at your home, you can access services like Remote Desktop, local shares, or even play games over the Internet from anywhere as if you were on the same local LAN network.
3. Enable 2-step verification.
If the site you are visiting supports it, enable 2-step verification, through which an additional code will be sent to your mobile phone via SMS to log in.
This way you ensure that no one else will be able to connect to these sites unless they also have your mobile phone in their possession.
4. Use codes even if they are optional
Optional codes are mainly found on mobile devices, and it is recommended to use this security method to unlock the screen. If the operating system supports a code of many digits and characters, prefer it over the familiar four-digit PIN, and if an application has the ability to add a code, enable it.
5. Use one-time credit card numbers.
Several foreign banks offer the option of providing one-time credit card numbers. This way, you won't have to store your credit card on a site and have to provide a different number and CVV2 code for each purchase.
However, this is a paid option that is not provided by Greek banks so far.
