A journalist in New Delhi was accompanying his parents to the train station when he saw three siblings, ages 7, 5, and 4, alone and abandoned, huddled together to protect themselves from the cold.
Abhishek Shukla, 33, was in a hurry to leave the scene, but he sent a message on Twitter, in which he wrote: "Can anyone help these children at the railway station in New Delhi, at the entrance to platform 16?"
The tweet went viral within minutes and police director Madhur Verma, who saw it, immediately sent a team of police officers to the scene to search for the children.
The three siblings, 7-year-old Rahnuma, 5-year-old Raja, and 4-year-old Sanya, had meanwhile been transferred to another platform at the station, where they were found by police officers hungry and scared.
The three children's parents are divorced and their father, who lives in another state, had taken them for a day. When it got dark, the man dropped them off at the train station and told them their mother would come by to pick them up.
Police handed the children over to the mother, who stated that her ex-husband had not asked her to go to the station to pick up the children and said she thought he was still with their father.
Police Commissioner Madhur Verma announced on his Twitter account that the three children are now safe at home, close to their mother. Netizens praised Verma for the good work he and his team did!
