Cyberattack at Premera could have exposed information of 11 million users. A spokesperson for healthcare provider Premera Blue Crosssaid that the identities, financial status and confidential medical information of millions of customers could have been exposed in a cyberattack.
In a statement on its website, Premera informs that security issues they were facing on their network have already been resolved and the company is working on strengthening security measures.
The initial attack occurred on May 4, 2014, but the intrusion was not detected until January 29, according to Premera.
A potential attack could expose 11 million users, about 6 million of whom reside in Washington state, including customers and employees of companies such as Amazon and Microsoft, according to Reuters.
In addition to customer information, Premera warns that the breach may have also affected email addresses, banking information, and social security numbers of business partners.
So far, the company says there is no evidence to confirm that information was stolen from its network or that data was stolen and used in any harmful way.
Those affected by the attack will be notified by mail, and in order to prevent phishing, the company warned customers not to respond to any e-mails with similar content.
The announcement of the Premera attack came shortly after Anthem said an attack on its network could have exposed information on close to 80 million people. The breach was also discovered on the same day.
