A change in iOS8, Apple's iPhone software , caused Twitter to lose almost 4 million active users, the company officially announced.
Based on the company's official announcements, the last quarter of 2014 saw a significant decline in active users as well as a decrease in the rate of new registrations, with only 4 million new users added, bringing the total number of monthly active users to 228 million.
Previously, in iOS 7, Apple's Safari browser had Twitter built in automatically, regardless of whether the phone's owner was a Twitter or not. However, Apple stopped having defaults in iOS8, resulting in this large drop in active users.
However, despite the issue with active users, sales revenue reached $479 million, a 97% year-over-year increase, exceeding initial profitability targets of $453 million.
