Banks in Russia , the US , Japan and Europe are falling victim to one of the largest electronic heists in history .
According to a report provided by Kaspersky Labs to the New York Times, more than a hundred banks in thirty countries were robbed, with the loot exceeding $300 million.
Chris Doggett of Kaspersky Labs told the New York Times that this is one of the most sophisticated attacks, mainly due to the methods used by cybercriminals to avoid detection.
The attack took place over time. The criminals installed monitoring software on the bank's computers to observe and record daily tactics.
Then, imitating the actions of the employees, they managed to make transfers of large amounts, which is not surprising at a business level. The deposits were made to previously opened virtual accounts. One Kaspersky Labs client reported losses of 7.3 million dollars!
Most of the victim banks are located in Russia. The FS-ISAC [Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center] in the US reports that the banking sector has been informed of the robbery. But customers have not.
