Whether we like it or not, our mobile phones nowadays hold valuable files for our lives and communication, including contacts, photos and work documents. So it's a big shock when we realize that we accidentally deleted one of them or when we realize that we can't get them off our device because it's broken. So what do we do in this case?
But let's start from the beginning. When we add files to any storage device, whether it's a USB stickor the internal memory of our device, they take up a certain amount of space. What most people don't know, however, is that when we delete them, all the operating system does is mark the space they occupied as available. In other words, our files haven't actually been deleted yet, unless the space they were in has already been taken by new ones. So the first thing we should do when we realize we've deleted something by mistake is to stop using our device!
Beyond that, there are various computer programs that can recover our data, as long as they were stored on the SD card of our device. The best in my opinion are probably Recuva, which is simpler to use but less reliable, and PhotoRec, which works on Windows, Mac, and Linux and thus recognizes the card's ext partitions. Of course, there are a lot of other programs out there and all we need to do to use them is remove the SD card from our phone and put it on the computer to scan it.
But what do we do if our files were on the device's internal memory or even worse, if its screen is broken and we can't get them? In the first case, we can use some of the specialized applications on the Play Store, which probably don't do many things as you've told us, but for both, there are similar programs on the computer for this purpose.
Two of the best in this field are Dr. Fone for Android and Kvisoft Data Recovery, but they are aimed at professional device repairers as they have a high purchase cost for the one time we will need them.
Whether we succeed or not, we should always remember that there is a way and we must try.
