German government websites, including Chancellor Merkel's, were hacked on Wednesday in a cyberattack claimed by an organization calling for Berlin to sever official ties with the Ukrainian government. The attack, which has been countered, Reuters reported, rendered the sites virtually inaccessible from 11 a.m. (GMT).
The CyberBerkut group claimed responsibility in a post on its website. “Berkut” refers to the riot police units of the country’s pro-Russian former president, Viktor Yanukovych, who was overthrown during violent uprisings in early 2014.
"CyberBerkut has blocked the websites of the German Chancellor and the Bundestag. We urge the people and government of Germany to stop financial and political support for the criminal regime in Kiev, which has started a bloody civil war," it said. However, it has not yet been confirmed by independent experts whether CyberBerkut is actually responsible for the attack.
