Rolls Royce at the service of "smart ships"

Rapid developments in the maritime industry as the sector of "smart ships" (ship intelligence) will be the next major transitional stage according to Rolls Royce 's predictions , as ships will require greater levels of data analysis to operate propulsion and navigation management systems - with the possible outcome of the emergence of autonomous ships.

Together with VTT Technical Research, Rolls Royce has revealed its latest vision for Ship Intelligence - a futuristic ship's bridge that could become a reality by 2025. This innovative bridge, (Future Operator Experience Concept-oX) will provide the crew with "intelligent" workstations, which will automatically recognize people entering the bridge and adapt to their preferences.

The windows will act as augmented reality screens that provide an enhanced view of the surrounding area, visualizing potential hazards that would otherwise be invisible to the human eye. For example, the system could detect dangerous ice floes or other vessels that could pose a risk - especially to large container ships.

The company already has many of the technologies that will meet the needs of the "smart ships" of the future, with the Unified Bridge system recently put into service on the Stril Luna, representing a new, ergonomic approach to the activities required on the bridge of a vessel. The field of remote monitoring/supervision of equipment on ships is also evolving, with Rolls Royce maintaining control centers in Norway and Finland, where ships and propulsion systems are monitored in real time around the world.
