Driverless cars, which are expected to be trialled on British roads in January 2015, are vulnerable to attacks by hackers and terrorists, according to research.
The study by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) of Britain states that terrorists or hackers who manage to “break” the software of cars will be able to create chaos and deliberate accidents on the roads, exploiting “loopholes” in their system.
As they say, 98% of software applications have flaws, which can cause major problems if and when the right person exploits them. And the software used in these cars, according to the IET, is likely to have similar problems.
If hackers can gain control of cars, they will cause chaos, so the only solution is to maximize the security of their system.
Britain's Department for Transport announced in July that the "smart" vehicles will be tested in three British cities, as part of a pilot program lasting 18 to 36 months. If all goes smoothly, these vehicles could be on the roads of the world within the next 15 years, the research concludes.
