A further step has been taken in Europol 's effort to strengthen cooperation with private security companies, as the European Cybercrime Center ( EC3) announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mnemonic , one of the largest companies providing Information Security Services in Scandinavia.
The agreement was signed last month, but Europol announced it on Thursday, saying that digital challenges require “a collective approach in which law enforcement and the private sector are obliged to work together.”.
One of the purposes of the memorandum is to exchange know-how, statistics and strategies regarding cyber threats.
However, beyond this, cooperation can lead to extensive actions, such as exchanging information on various cyber threats, analyzing malware, or investigating passive DNS data.
The head of EC3 said the agreement was not just a formality, but a bond between the two entities that should act to prosecute cybercrime.
Jorn Tore Hov, Vice President of Mnemonic, said that the inclusion of other experts from the public and private sectors, as well as the exchange of relevant information, translates into “a significant leap forward in the fight against cybercrime.”.
Mnemonic is not the first private company to partner with Europol. In early October, the law enforcement agency signed a similar memorandum of understanding with Kaspersky .
