Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdel Aziz Al Sheikh, accused Twitter, the social networking site that allows the exchange of short messages, of being "a source of lies and slander.".
If used properly, Twitter "could be a real advantage, but unfortunately they are exploiting it for trivial matters," the mufti added on the show he presents, "Fatwa," on the country's public television.
Twitter “is a source of all evil and destruction,” he continued. “People flock to it believing it is a source of reliable information, but it is a source of lies and slander,” he stressed.
The service is very popular in Saudi Arabia and many Saudis disagree with the mufti's views, although many others support him. "For this I will repent and close my account, to distance myself from this great evil," one user wrote with some sarcasm.
“Esteemed Sheikh, how can you judge something without having used it?” asked another.
