Security researchers are warning of a new malvertising campaign on the Pirate Bay, which leverages the Angler exploit kit.
The Pirate Bay is often targeted by such attacks, as it meets the demands of cybercriminals, who are trying to target an increasing number of users and use ad networks that are easier to hack.
Attackers, who exploit ads on the Pirate Bay to carry out drive-by download attacks, are using the Angler exploit kit to distribute malware, according to Malwarebytes researcher Jerome Segura.
Angler is designed to scan web browsers for outdated versions of Adobe Reader, Java, and Flash (which is the target in this case). Vulnerabilities in these software solutions are then exploited to compromise computers.
In this particular case, according to the researcher, cybercriminals used a threat, which is detected as Trojan.Ransom.ED by Malwarebytes.
