The issue of pedophile teachers came to light last week, causing shock nationwide. Among the seven pedophiles whose names were forwarded by the Cybercrime Prosecution to the Ministry of Education in order to expel the teachers involved in such cases from schools, is a lecturer at the University of Patras.
According to the newspaper "Ethnos tis Kyriakis", this is a 40-year-old lecturer in the Department of Business Administration, who, although he was arrested in 2009, only last Friday was the dean of the institution signed the declaratory act of his automatic mandatory leave. During this entire period, he was allegedly present in the university halls.
The lecturer was arrested in October 2009 during a months-long police operation codenamed "Charlie". At that time, the Hellenic Police announced that 16 people had been arrested who were involved in one of the largest child pornography rings. An investigation that had been launched after Scotland Yard was informed to identify electronic traces of people who participated in sharing pornographic material with minors via a website. A total of 55 people were involved in the case, against whom a case had been filed for serial and habitual pornography.
According to the case file filed in 2009 against the lecturer in question, evidence from which "The Sunday Nation" brings to light, the police had found and confiscated two hard drives from the professor's home, on which 7,000 files (photographs and videos) depicting minors as young as 10 years old were located and recovered with special software.
In fact, as the Sunday newspaper notes, citing testimonies from officers of the Cybercrime Investigation Unit, the volume of files in the lecturer's possession was enormous, while the content of the photographs was such that no one could bear to see them.
The lecturer above all suspicion
As the newspaper "Ethnos tis Kyriakis" notes, the revelation of the lecturer's involvement in 2009 caused a shock in Patras, as the 35-year-old, at the time, had not given any rights to the university community.
A graduate of the University of Piraeus, where he also received his doctorate, with postgraduate studies at a major English university and numerous publications in Greek and international scientific journals, intense writing activity and rich research work, with studies also in music, the 40-year-old professor had taught courses at several higher education institutions, while in 2010 he was appointed lecturer at the University of Patras. In 2001, as noted by Ethnos of Sunday, he worked as a special associate-expert of the Secretary General of Commerce at the Ministry of Development and later at a large company. A year after his involvement in the child pornography case, he became a member of the University Senate as a representative of the lecturers.
As for his claims to the police about the material found on his hard drives? He had claimed that the child pornography material was for his research project. An excuse that did not convince..
