Angelos Getsis is a 3rd year high school student at the 3rd High School of Arta, dreams of studying Computer Engineering and Informatics in Ioannina and recently won the Local Prize (1st in Greece) in the Google Science Fair 2014 competition, which is aimed at children aged 13-18. What more could you ask for from a child prodigy?
The other Greece of creation and ingenuity is here and is enduring despite the crisis. Angelos' project concerns the replacement of the white cane of the blind with special glasses. Thus, people with visual impairments can use these glasses to be warned through a vibration of possible obstacles in front of them and to avoid them. Angelos, although he has never met a blind person in his life, wants to help people with visual impairments with this project and raise awareness among others.
His work was ranked among the thirty-two (32) best in the world, six (6) in Europe and the first in Greece. It should be noted that many thousands of students from all over the world participated in this competition and it is a fact for the world of technology. His work, as provided for by the terms of participation in the competition, will be utilized by Google and of course developments regarding it are expected.
The name of the invention is PEACE, which stands for Portable Evasive Assistant CE, and it uses ultrasound to detect obstacles in a blind person's environment and alert them to their existence.
In the note that accompanied his work, Angelos Getsis noted, among other things, that since the age of 13, he had become aware of the blind and had thought about a device that would help them. And he arrived at this device, the usefulness of which was recognized by Google.
