Joint action to combat major cybercrimes is being undertaken by EC3, the European Cybercrime Centre, the EU Cybercrime Taskforce, the FBI and the UK National Crime Agency (NCA). The law enforcement agencies are working together to establish the J-CAT (Joint Cybercrime Action Taskforce) which will undertake the international coordination of police forces investigating crimes committed via the Internet, where there are no borders. J-CAT has already been operating as a pilot for six months.
So far, J-CAT has involved police officers from Austria, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. Australia and Colombia have also committed to participating in the ongoing effort.
Among other things, J-CAT will investigate cases involving malware creation, its distribution, botnet creation, Crime as a Service, Internet fraud, Trojan creation for e-banking logins, unauthorized network access and other crimes. J-CAT will also work closely with CERT-EU, the EU's IT emergency response team.
The J-CAT team will be led by Andy Archibald, Deputy Director at the National Cyber Crime Unit from the British NCA.
