Since the 1950s, a fully automated home has been a staple of every futuristic book or movie.
Now, technology is making it possible for this “vision” of every science fiction fan to become a reality in the coming years.
Internet giants such as Apple, Google and AT&T are entering the battle to control the technology that will allow residents to live in a fully remote-controlled home, as well as new companies that are trying to create very economical and effective packages.
All that will be needed is a smartphone, a control system and sensors combined with enough inspiration, since each resident will be able to personalize the operation of their own “smart” home.
Already small companies such as Smart Things, which TIME magazine presents in its tribute, have created platforms where they allow users to create and propose their own inspired applications for the “smart” home system and at the same time download as many applications as they find interesting or useful.
Each of us, in other words, will be able to download functions, for example, waking up, making coffee, or having the speakers… bark if the house cat is naughty.
The market that will be created within the next three to five years is estimated to reach 12 billion dollars from the beginning and that is why many companies are trying to secure the lion's share from now on.
It is no coincidence that even companies that manufacture electrical appliances, such as Samsung and LG, are setting up applications that allow televisions and refrigerators to “collaborate” with the mobile phones of the same brand.
The biggest problem that businesses operating in this sector are called upon to prevent is not the networking of all the devices in a "smart" home - as this can already be done thanks to the Internet - but the security of users, who will have every part of their home connected to the Internet and therefore vulnerable to malicious hackers.
