Two men have been arrested in Southern California on charges of raping and killing four women over the past six months. Franc Cano and Steven Dean Gordon, 27 and 45, face the death penalty if convicted of their crimes – they are due to appear in court in Orange , California, tomorrow, Thursday.
Anaheim police arrived at their arrest by taking data from the wristbands they were wearing, which had GPS built in. After their arrest, the authorities compared the data from the wristbands with what they had in their possession and confirmed that the defendants were at the places where the rapes and murders were committed, at the same times as the crimes. However, their mistake in not removing or even disabling the devices they were wearing betrayed them and led the authorities to their arrest.
Recently, the LA Times reported that, given that prisons in California and the US are full, many convicts are released after first being given GPS devices that they are required to carry with them at all times. In several cases, however, they have been rearrested and accused of similar acts (rape, pedophilia, kidnapping, mostly) having deactivated or removed these devices from them, wanting to erase any traces and evidence.
So, wearables are also at the service of the Law...
