Google Glass, the internet-connected "smart" glasses-computers, will be available for purchase to consumers in the US for a limited time, starting on April 15.
Anyone who wants to, according to the French Agency, will pay 1,500 euros and will now join the ever-expanding group of "pioneer" users that the American company has already begun to create, in order to test its glasses before they are made widely available on the market.
"The 'explorers' are moms, artists, surgeons, rock singers, and each of them has brought a new perspective that makes our glasses better. But every day we receive requests from those of you who have not yet joined our program and we want your contribution too," Google said.
So, starting April 15, anyone living in the US will have the opportunity to own Google Glass for a limited time period, which has not been specified for how long it will last.
Google has already announced that it is working with Ray Ban and other leading eyeglass frame manufacturers to create new "smart" products. The first of these are expected to hit the market in 2015.
However, the American company will first have to allay widespread concerns that its glasses - which can take videos and photos - also have their "dark" side, especially regarding the possible violation of people's privacy without their knowledge, points out AMPE.
For its part, Google has countered that "if someone wants to secretly record you, there are much better cameras on the market than our glasses that you wear openly on your face and a light comes on every time you give a voice command or press a button. If a company wanted to design a secret spying device, they could do a better job than Glass.".
At this stage, several developers are already developing software applications for the "smart" glasses, which vary from receiving weather reports via the Internet to sharing videos and playing video games. Google Glass connects to the Internet using scattered free wireless connection points (Wi-fi), or by connecting wirelessly to the user's mobile phone, which must have a paid Internet connection. Images and videos can be exchanged via the social network Google Plus.
