Support for the operating system ends on April 7th

Banks are particularly persistent when they ask us to be consistent with our obligations. But what happens when they have to be consistent with their own obligations? Judging by their response to Microsoft's call to change the operating system of ATMs (Automated Teller Machines), they probably don't do it so well!

Microsoft has announced since 2007 that it will stop supporting Windows XP. This will officially happen on April 7, 2014.

However, of the approximately 2.2 million ATMs in banks around the world, only 440,000 have been upgraded to Windows 7. All the rest run and will run in an XP environment.

According to NCR, the company that manufactures the most ATMs in the world, banks will pay dearly for this delay.

Microsoft is asking for around $100 million (per US bank) to continue supporting and protecting the old ATM operating system from hackers.

The aforementioned amount includes the cost of installing the new operating system, but because many banks have requested the upgrade late, the waiting list is huge and the process is expected to be delayed.
