If you're particularly concerned about the security of your conversations, you now have a reason to feel more confident. It'll just cost you around 2,000 euros.
German company Secusmart is set to launch a secure version of BlackBerry 10 for €2,000, without a contract. This is the version of the device the company offers for the secure communications needs of government officials, bankers, businesspeople and lawyers.
What makes Secusmart's modified BlackBerry 10 different is its SecuSuite hardware encryption suite. This includes ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptography), party authentication, and 128-bit AES encryption. The SecuSuite encryption suite is built into a dedicated microSD card that provides additional secure storage on the device for storing important data.
However, for the above security parameters to apply, both parties must have the modified BlackBerry. Otherwise, if one of the parties has a shared mobile phone, the communication will remain vulnerable to eavesdropping.
This move by Secusmart comes at a time when concerns about the security of communications (telephone and electronic) are at their peak, globally. In fact, the company intends to make similar "modifications" to other commercially available Android and iOS devices. By launching secure devices at lower prices, the company believes that there is potential for growth in the relevant market.
According to Bloomberg, in 2013, the company delivered more than 2,000 secure BlackBerrys to the German government alone. German Chancellor Angela Merkel was the recipient of one of those smartphones. The company has also sold modified mobile phones to various governments in northern Europe, South America and the Middle East.
