WhatsApp founder Jan Koum posted an apology on Sunday and explained that Saturday's outage was due to a network router error.
“We are sorry for the outage,” Koum wrote. “It was our largest outage in years. It was caused by a network router error that escalated to our servers.”
“We have worked with our service provider to resolve the issue and ensure it doesn’t happen again.” WhatsApp was offline for more than three hours on Saturday, just days after Facebook bought it for $19 billion. The service initially said it was “experiencing server issues,” without elaborating.
