Samsung unveiled its new Galaxy S5 today at the Unpacked 5 event at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. As we already knew, the new smartphone has a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display at 1080p. The device brings a fingerprint sensor built into the device's home button, copying the Touch ID that Apple introduced with the iPhone 5s.
The polycarbonate Samsung Galaxy S5 looks similar to previous models, although it has a unique soft-touch that will bring an unprecedented texture, a waterproof casing (waterproof casing does not mean that you will be able to take it with you on your dives), and comes in two colors of blue and copper gold combined with black and white.
The 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display has a resolution of 1920×1080. The device is powered by a quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz with 2GB of RAM. It runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat and includes an upgraded 16-megapixel camera with autofocus and fast, real-time HDR. It has a 20% longer battery life than the previous generation phones and includes a built-in power saving mode that will activate a black and white screen with limited access to apps when the battery is low.
Samsung is including a heart rate sensor next to the camera flash on the new smartphone, which can measure your heart rate if you place a finger on the sensor. The heart rate sensor is accompanied by a standard accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor, compass, and infrared sensor.
Samsung's Galaxy S5 is also designed to work with a new fitness tracker, the Gear Fit, which comes with the Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches. The Gear Fit focuses on heart rate and step counting. It features an AMOLED touchscreen that will offer smartphone notifications and notifications, but it won't include a camera, microphone, or speaker.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 and Gear Fitwill be released in April, but the company has not announced yet prices.
