Dropbox outage not due to hacking

Dropbox-Has-Not-Been-Hacked-Outage-Caused-During-Internal-Maintenance

Dropbox went down for a few hours, but not due to a breach .

As is often the case when Dropbox goes down, a group of hackers has claimed responsibility for the incident. Hackers from the “1775 Sec” group claimed that the service was compromised and leaked some information stolen from Dropbox’s system.

After the service was restored, Dropbox clarified that, “The Dropbox website is back up! Claims that user information was leaked are a scam. The outage was caused during internal maintenance. Thank you for your patience!”

By the time the announcement was made, many had already realized that the hackers' claims were false and that the leaked data was from an earlier breach. Shortly after, the 1775 Sec team admitted that the leak was fake, noting that it had done so in honor of the late Aaron Schwartz.
