Personal computers (PCs) are experiencing their worst sales in history. According to International Data Corporation (IDC), it is estimated that it will reach 10.1%.
PC sales have been in decline for the past six quarters, the longest such period on record globally. The decline in personal computers, both desktop and laptop, is mainly due to a shift in consumer interest towards tablets and smartphones.
"Perhaps the biggest concern about future PC demand is the lack of reason to replace an older system," IDC analyst Jay Chu said, according to the BBC. Global PC sales are expected to continue their downward trend in 2014, although at a slower pace.
Even in developing markets, where PC sales have been on the rise so far, a downward trend is expected next year, also due to the ever-growing interest in cheap Android tablets.
However, personal computer sales show a noticeable differentiation between companies and private users, with demand in the business sector showing a much smaller annual decrease (5%) compared to private consumers (a drop of almost 15%).
