WhatsApp is set to end support for several older smartphones as part of its new update cycle, affecting both iPhone and Android users. The change aims to improve security, performance, and compatibility with new features.

iPhones that cannot be upgraded to iOS 15.1 or later will lose access to the app. The messaging platform will no longer support devices that do not meet this requirement, such as older models of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 series.
Devices that remain on unsupported iOS versions will gradually lose access to WhatsApp services, including the ability to send and receive messages.
For example, the models that are affected and cannot be upgraded to iOS 15.1 or later are:
- iPhone 5
- iPhone 5c
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
These devices will no longer be compatible with the latest version of WhatsApp.

Android devices running version 6.0 or earlier will also lose access to WhatsApp, as the company gradually withdraws support for older operating systems that no longer receive updates.
It has been confirmed that as of September 8, 2026, WhatsApp will stop working on phones running versions older than Android 6.0. Specifically, devices running Android 5.0 and 5.1 will completely lose access to the app.
Affected users are advised to take the following actions:
- Create backup copies of their conversations and files to avoid data loss
- Check if there is a software update available for their device
- Consider purchasing a newer device if their phone is no longer supported
