Anthropic and Wall Street create $1.5 billion pipeline to private capital markets

On Sunday night, the Wall Street Journal reported that Anthropic is closing in on a roughly $1.5 billion joint venture with a small group of Wall Street firms. A joint venture with Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, Goldman Sachs and General Atlantic will sell Claude to the acquiring firms’ portfolio companies. DeployCo arrived first; it’s bigger.

There’s a kind of business school question that has been silently answered over the past month: which is more valuable to a company with a cutting-edge model, the next $50 billion check from a venture capitalist or a permanent distribution channel to the operating companies of the world’s largest private equity markets? Anthropic is working on the latter answer.

On Sunday night, the Wall Street Journal reported that Anthropic was closing in on a roughly $1.5 billion joint venture with a small group of Wall Street firms, with an announcement expected soon. The investors will create a vehicle that acts as something between an advisory arm and a development factory, helping the private equity backers’ portfolio companies integrate Claude into their day-to-day operations.

The proposition is simple. The acquiring companies own thousands of operating businesses in sectors such as healthcare, logistics, manufacturing and financial services. Each one is a potential Anthropic customer. Selling to them one by one, in the typical enterprise software cycle, would take years.

Executing within a joint venture compresses this timeline into months. In other words, it's not so much a product launch as it is a sales infrastructure project.

OpenAI came in first, but smaller. The DeployCo vehicle is expected to be valued at $10 billion in a round closing in early May, with OpenAI guaranteeing private equity backers a 17.5% for five years.

Anthropic's structure is different in important ways. The total commitment is smaller in absolute terms but more concentrated, with Anthropic itself contributing roughly the same amount as its largest financial partner. There is no public mention of guaranteed returns.

The list of investors is heavier on prestige and lighter on breadth: Blackstone is the world's largest alternative asset manager, Hellman & Friedman is among the most disciplined big buyout houses, Goldman is Goldman, and General Atlantic is giving the business a growth stake.

Each side is, in essence, betting on a different proposition. OpenAI’s DeployCo is a numbers game: get as many private equity portfolios into a committed channel as possible, quickly. Anthropic’s venture is a credibility game: anchor Claude within a smaller number of high-profile financial firms, whose endorsement, in turn, sells the model to the rest of the market.

The timing is no coincidence. Anthropic has received pre-emptive offers for a round of about $50 billion at a valuation in the $850-900 billion range, with the company's board expected to decide in May and an IPO targeted for October 2026 at the earliest.

Anthropic's annual regulatory revenue trajectory, according to its own disclosures, has grown from about $9 billion at the end of 2025 to about $30 billion by the end of March 2026. A successful IPO with these numbers requires the company to demonstrate not only the capability of the model but also resilient revenue at scale from businesses.

A joint venture that funnels Claude into the portfolio companies of three or four large acquisition firms creates exactly the kind of revenue growth that public market investors prefer to model.

It also has narrative value. Claude, in this narrative, is not just a conversational product or a developer API, but an enterprise infrastructure, embedded within operational businesses that move important pieces of the real economy.
