"Deadly" teasing about appearance, sexual gestures, spreading rumors, and harassment via Facebook are everyday occurrences for a large portion of students
Unprovoked and vulgar verbal attacks, acts of violence, threats and online shaming constitute a phenomenon that is also growing in the Greek school reality.
Specifically, more than 1 in 10 students have fallen victim to bullying, vulgar verbal attacks and online shaming, as reported in a publication by "Kathimerini".
"Deadly" teasing about appearance, sexual gestures, spreading rumors, harassment via Facebook, which make up so-called bullying, are everyday life for a large portion of students.
According to data from various surveys, it appears that approximately 10-15% of Greek students, children and adolescents, are at any given time victims of school bullying by students of the same or older age (usually boys).
According to a nationwide survey by the Research University Institute of Mental Health (RIMH), 8.5% of adolescents report being bullied at least two to three times a month, while 15.8% (one in six) admit to being bullies. In a similar survey conducted in 2002, the percentage of those who reported bullying others did not exceed 9.1%.
A large survey by "Smile of the Child" as part of a pan-European campaign revealed that approximately 32% of students have been the victim of bullying at least once (34.2% boys, 29.71% girls), while 30.2% have at some point been the perpetrators of such incidents.
The most common form of bullying is name-calling (60.69%), followed by pushing and hitting (45.39%) and teasing based on appearance (36.3%). Of particular concern is the fact that 14.26% reported being a victim of posting humiliating photos on the Internet and 12.82% of being a victim of distributing such photos via mobile phones.
