The NSA, in collaboration with its British counterpart, the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), has secretly placed “taps” on the internal networks of Yahoo and Google, two of the largest Internet companies, on the overall traffic of data on the Internet.
The function of these “services” is to monitor the information flowing between the huge data centers that these companies maintain in various locations around the world.
Generally speaking, Google and Yahoo use owned and/or leased lines to synchronize their data centers with each other.
The graphic below shows how the NSA and GCHQ have infiltrated these internal networks, using Google as an example.
Less is known about Yahoo's networks, but the practices the NSA employs there are believed to be similar.
