A growing number of German public figures are calling on Berlin to grant Edward Snowden asylum in Germany. More than 50 people have called on the government to step up its support for the whistleblower, following revelations that the NSA spied on Angela Merkel and other heads of state for years.
They argue that it is not only Germany that should consider extending protection measures for Snowden, but also Norway, which would be one of the best places to host the whistleblower, given their track record with political asylum.
The list includes writers Hans Magnus Enzensberger and Daniel Kehlmann, actor Daniel Brühl, football league president Reinhard Rauball and many others, according to reports in Der Spiegel.
Edward Snowden has supported German authorities, saying he is willing to testify in order to clarify anything as part of their investigation into the actions of the United States when it comes to Germany.
The current situation in Russia prevents Snowden from leaving the country, which means that German authorities will have to visit him to take his statement.
