Microsoft is reshuffling its artificial intelligence (AI) responsibilities after a veteran executive left. The company is reorganizing how it develops its Copilot assistant , unifying the consumer and commercial sides of Copilot to create a more cohesive experience for both businesses and consumers.
Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleymanwill now focus on building AI models , rather than working directly on the assistant-like features of consumer Copilot. Suleyman joined Microsoft nearly two years ago after the company hired several people from Inflection AI. Following his hire, consumer Copilot underwent a major redesign that was reminiscent of Inflection AI’s work with the personalized AI assistant Pi, while the commercial version of Copilot remained separate.

Jacob Andreou will lead the Copilot experience across commercial and consumer sectors, overseeing design, product, development and engineering. Andreou joined Microsoft AI last year.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadellasaid in an internal memo: “We are bringing Copilot, the commercial and consumer ecosystem together, as a unified effort. This will span four connected pillars: Copilot experience, Copilot platform, Microsoft 365 apps , and AI models. This is how we move from a collection of great products to a truly integrated system, one that is simpler and more powerful for customers.”

This restructuring was necessary for Microsoft, as the consumer and enterprise editions of Copilot not only appeared different but also did not have a common set of functionalities. The unification aims to address the issue of Copilot's ownership within the company.
Microsoft Copilot: New leadership team
A new leadership team for Copilot has been formed, includingJacob Andreou, Ryan Roslansky, Perry Clarke and Charles Lamanna. Roslansky, Clarke and Lamanna will lead Microsoft 365 apps and the Copilot platform, while Andreou will work to align the experience across both areas of Copilot.

Suleyman will focus on building AI models Microsoft’s, which he believes will improve all of the company’s products. He said, “These models will allow us to create production lines, tailored to the business, that will help improve all of our products across the company.” Andreou will maintain a connection with Suleyman, who will continue to be involved in the day-to-day operations of Microsoft AI.
The above changes may indicate that Microsoft's attempt to differentiate the Copilot experience for consumers and businesses has not worked out as expected. The consumer Copilot user experience was unique, and it remains to be seen whether Microsoft will continue to pursue this digital assistant direction. It is also uncertain what will happen to Microsoft Edge, Bing, MSN and the company's advertising businesses that reported to Suleyman.
