Snowden reveals Project Muscular. How the NSA broke into Google's Cloud?

New documents leaked by Edward Snowden accuse the US National Security Agency (NSA) of having managed to break the links between Google and Yahoo datacenters. The Washington Post, citing documents obtained by Edward Snowden, reports that the NSA is able to have the details of hundreds of millions of user accounts from around the world.

A document marked "top secret" and dated January 9, 2013, states that the service is able to send millions of records daily from Yahoo and Google data centers to its headquarters at Fort Meade. In the previous 30 days, the service reportedly managed to collect 181 million new records, including metadata as well as the content of communications.

The project, codenamed "Muscular," operates in collaboration with the British secret service GCHQ, and aims to penetrate the cables that connect the data centers of the two major Internet technology companies.

The project, according to the service's claims, exploits weak points in Google and Yahoo's Cloud systems - that is, where their customers' data is stored.

Both companies use private fiber optic cables owned by Tier 1 companies, but leased to the Internet giants to get the speed, security(!) and reliability(!) they need.

The leaked NSA slide, titled “Google Cloud Exploitation,” shows handwritten notes with a diagram explaining how the service can access foreign networks. The handwriting very graphically and with a smile please show the point where the encryption is bypassed “SSL added and removed here.” We are social! Facebook4 Google Twitter1 Pinterest Reddit.
