The group's 40-page report contains a wealth of statistics, many of which are likely to make you feel sad about the ever-changing nature of childhood. In 2011, for example, children under 8 spent, on average, about five minutes a day on smartphones and tablets. By 2013, that time had tripled to 15 minutes.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children under two years of age should not spend time in front of screens, including phones, tablets, and television. A child's brain develops rapidly during these early years, and young children learn best from interacting with people, not screens.
