Following the outbreak of the scandal regarding the revelation of the actions of the US National Security Agency (NSA) against millions of American citizens, it has now become clear that the monitoring of political communications by government agencies is not a conspiracy fantasy, but a tangible reality.
But what one should also know is that the end of privacy and individual freedom has not come: it is simply becoming absolutely clear that we must all start being more careful in the way we choose to make sensitive data and information public on various communication networks.
A few simple methods are enough to protect us from all kinds of unwanted eavesdroppers:
1. When you want to chat or share information online, avoid high-profile chat forums and other large providers and prefer start-ups, which have not yet been registered and indexed by Google, Microsoft and Yahoo. This will reduce the chances of falling victim to surveillance.
2. Do you want to communicate by phone, but have reasons to be afraid to do it the conventional way? No problem: first of all, leave all your communication devices at home (mobile phone, tablet, laptop), as there is no device anymore that does not communicate continuously via GPS with a satellite system. Choose a shady part of the city and specifically one that is monitored by an old-fashioned surveillance camera.
Buy a cell phone with a prepaid card and make sure to pay with cash. Remove the battery, go to a small, discreet cafe, put it back in, turn the phone on, make your phone call, then turn the phone off again and remove the battery. This way, using the phone for a few minutes doesn't allow anyone to trace the call and record its content.
3. Five important words that should not be forgotten: cookies track everything. They make your location, as well as the websites you visit, identifiable. However, it is of course impossible to remove all cookies from your personal computer. Which means that you have to follow the same aforementioned procedure: buy a cheap tablet or laptop with cash, remove the battery, go to a coffee shop, reinsert it, create an email account with false details, send whatever you want to send, clear the cookies, delete the browsing history, turn off the computer and remove the battery.
The above three tricks for avoiding tracking your devices, although they do not completely remove your personal "fingerprint", nevertheless significantly reduce the likelihood of the wrong people tracking you.
