Hackers often target the rich and powerful, who seem to have the most to lose, according to Professor Carsten Maple, a member of the Information Assurance Advisory Council.
The warning came after the Sunday Express revealed that on average one patient loses personal medical records or has their data stolen.
Data from the Information Commissioner for the second quarter of 2013 revealed 91 breaches of health security. Professor Maple said patients who were secretly battling illnesses such as HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases were vulnerable to blackmail.
