The online department store Amazon has banned the sale of foie gras on its British website, according to the terms of sale listed on the site today.
"Parts or products derived from whale, dolphin, shark, elephant (including ivory) or any other plant or animal that is threatened and regulated are prohibited, as are products containing foie gras," Amazon.co.uk states.
“All sellers on Amazon.co.uk must agree to our guidelines in relation to products sold on our site,” an Amazon UK spokesperson commented, without elaborating further on the motivations or the start date of the ban.
This product, which is legal to import into Britain, is still available on many other British online sales sites.
Amazon's decision was welcomed by animal rights groups such as Viva!, Peta and L214, which pointed out that force-feeding and foie gras production methods in general – particularly in France – are cruel to geese and ducks.
Viva! also announced that it presented Amazon with “evidence of the unacceptable pain caused by this production and a petition signed by 10,000 Amazon customers who support Viva!.”.
