This year, Apple introduced a new capacitive button on the side of the iPhone 16, designed for easy access when holding the phone horizontally. The button doubles as a camera shutter, offering haptic feedback.
Apple's goal was to improve the photo-taking experience by simulating the feel of a traditional camera. However, some users seem unimpressed, with many calling this feature one of Apple's most disappointing innovations to date. What's more, the cost of repairing this button is surprisingly high.
The capacitive button comes with a hidden cost, however. According to reports, it is made up of nine different components, which significantly increases the chance of failure. If the button does fail, Apple classifies it as “other damage,” and the repair cost is impressive.

For the iPhone 16, the repair cost could reach RMB 4,399 (~$562), while for the iPhone 16 Pro, it could skyrocket to RMB 5,299 (~$676). These prices suggest that fixing the button may require replacing the motherboard, causing even more frustration among the public.
