In July 2024, Indian crypto exchange WazirXadmitted to being the victim of a cyberattack that resulted in the theft of $230 million worth of crypto assets. Now, the hackers behind the WazirX heist have begun transferring funds using crypto-mixing service Tornado Cashto cover their tracks.

Tornado Cash allows crypto users to exchange tokens by masking wallet addresses across different blockchains. The service is often used by cybercriminals toavoid detection of themselves and stolen crypto by authorities.

Arkham data shows that the WazirX hackers moved nearly $4 million worth of ether (ETH) in 16 transactions on the network using a Tornado Cash router. The address contains over $155 million worth of various tokens (mostly ether) and had not previously moved funds to Tornado.
When crypto exchange WazirX disclosed the breach, it said: “ A cyberattack occurred on one of our [ multi -signature ] wallets resulting in the loss of over $230 million in funds .” This wallet operated using the services of digital asset custodian Liminal .
WazirX said the attack stemmed from a mismatch between the information displayed on Liminal and the signed information. The attackers were able to replace the payload and control of the wallet was transferred to an attacker.

Blockchain analytics firm Ellipticsaid the attack had all the hallmarks of attacks by North Korean hackers. Researcher ZachXBT agreed, telling X that the attack on WazirX resembled an attack by the North Korean Lazarus.
The group is estimated to have laundered more than $1 billion in stolen fundsthrough the Tornado Cash service before OFAC sanctions in 2022.
The North Korean crypto theft has significant implications for the global economy. First, the theft creates uncertainty and loss of confidence in the cryptocurrency market. Investors and users are concerned about the safety of their funds and the possibility of becoming victims of cyberattacks.

The loss of public trust can negatively affect the value of cryptocurrencies.
Finally, these attacks could have geopolitical implications. North Korea is using stolen cryptocurrencies to fund its nuclear weapons and missile programs. This could threaten regional security and provoke reactions from other countries.
