Nintendo has given Switch players a long-awaited gift alongside the Switch's Communication of its year-end financial results, confirming that the console's successor, Nintendo Switch 2, will be revealed before April 2025. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said that a next generation of Nintendo Switch consoles will be announced "within this financial year" - giving the Japanese video game giant a deadline of March 31, 2025. This fits nicely with the current rumored third-quarter 2025 release.

On the announcement of the Switch 2 console, Furukawa said:

We'll make an announcement about the successor to the Nintendo Switch later this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of the Nintendo Switch in March 2015. We will be conducting a Nintendo Direct this June about Nintendo Switch software for the second half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during this presentation.

Sales of Switch consoles have actually declined since their peak in 2021, while the model OLED - the most recent version of the now nearly decade-old console - received a modest 1.1% increase in annual sales. However, the platform's user numbers remain healthy, with Nintendo claiming that the 123 million annual players recorded between April 2023 and March 2024 were "highest recorded since the Nintendo Switch was released.”

Nintendo hasn't abandoned the current generation of Switch consoles, however. On predictions of the company stated that it will "try to put not just one system in every home, but several in every home, or even one for each person.”
