Blue Screen of Death: What it means and what to do when it appears

The BSOD, or Blue Screen of Death , is an iconic error screen that anyone who has ever used a Windows computer has probably encountered at some point. It's no fun, and it can mean that there's a problem with your computer that needs fixing. But in most cases, a simple update to your computer will be enough to prevent it from happening again.

Blue Screen of Death

The Blue Screen of Death is an error screen that appears when something has gone terribly wrong with your computer. It doesn't mean it's broken, but it means something has gone so wrong that it can no longer function and needs to be restarted.

BSODs can be caused by many reasons, although errors are one of the most common. They can also be caused by faulty hardware, overheating components, power supply consistency issues, software errors, poorly installed Windows updates, or errors in the operating system.

The Blue Screen of Death doesn't necessarily mean the end of the world, but if they appear frequently with the same error messages, you probably have something on your system that needs repair or replacement.

If you didn't do anything particularly notable or different with your computer or haven't made any obvious changes to it in the recent past, then you can probably just restart your computer and continue using it as before.

However, if you consistently get a BSOD when performing certain tasks or find it appearing more frequently, then you may need to take further steps.

The first thing to do is to look up the error code you were given. This might be something like “CRITICAL_PROCESS DIED” or “IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL”. If this error code is the same every time you get a Blue Screen of Death, you can search for these phrases on Google to find specific instructions on how to fix this problem, or scan the QR code for a more direct solution.

If the error code you're encountering has a specific resolution method, follow these steps to see if that solves your problem. If it doesn't, however, or you're encountering seemingly random BSOD error messages, you can try some of these more general fixes.

  • Shut down the computer and remove every USB device and peripheral except those you need, such as keyboard and mouse.
  • Restart the system in safe mode.
  • If you recently installed any new software, uninstall it. Similarly, if you just installed any new drivers for your graphics card or other hardware, uninstall them or roll them back to an older version where you weren't experiencing these issues.

However, if making changes to the system hasn't stopped the Blue Screen of Death from appearing, you may need to try some other fixes.

  • Update your operating system and drivers
  • Replace corrupted files
  • Try a system restore
  • Run a scan for malware
  • Try the Get Help app
  • It could be the memory
  • Reinstall Windows
