A new data privacy bill aims to give American citizens full data privacy rights at the national level, eliminating the confusion of state laws currently in place.
The American Privacy Bill of Rights was announced last Sunday by House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and SenateMaria Cantwell (D-WA).
This bill will enable personal data to be controlled and will limit the collection, retention and use of data by companies – beyond what is necessary – to provide services.

It will also allow Americans to have greater control over the use of their personal data, including the ability to prevent it from being transferred or sold. In addition, citizens will have the option to request that their data not be processed if a company changes its privacy policy after providing their data.
In addition, the legislation requires stricter protection of privacy and sensitive data with the necessary consent of the user before it is transferred to third parties. In addition, companies should allow users to access ,correct, delete and export their data, as well as be able to block targeted advertising.
"Big Tech must be restricted by prohibiting it from tracking, manipulating, and exploiting people for profit without their consent. Americans overwhelmingly want these rights and are looking to us, their elected representatives, to take action," according to the Senate.
