Hardware expert Ken Pillonel's latest project involves upgrading the AirPods Max and replacing the Lightning port with a USB-C port.
This initiative is part of his ongoing efforts to highlight issues surrounding repairability and sustainability in consumer electronics products.

This upgrade addresses some users' frustration with the high-end headphones ' continued reliance on the Lightning port for charging. While most Apple devices have adopted USB-C, rumors suggest that the second-generation device will adopt the change. This upgrade could also act as a viable solution for users with damaged Lightning ports on their AirPods Max, avoiding the costly cost of replacing them.
Pillonel created a custom replacement part to enable all tech-savvy AirPods Max users to upgrade their headphones to USB-C on their own. The effort involved complex design and manufacturing processes, including the development of an open-source USB-C conversion circuit and a custom printed circuit board that fit perfectly without the need to drill or damage any original components.
The replacement part is designed to be placed on top of the existing board, avoiding contact with other components. The design also addresses potential durability concerns by utilizing a flexible section that reduces stress on the connection, enhancing the longevity of this kit.
Pillonel considered enabling audio transmission over the USB-C port, but ultimately decided against it due to the high cost and complexity involved in integrating Apple's proprietary technology

The second-generation AirPods Max are expected to launch in late 2024, with the big upgrade being the addition of a USB-C port instead of Lightning. There are no other major changes planned, suggesting the headphones may lose features like the H2 chip and Adaptive Audio, while new color options are possible.
