Combining the wisdom of Replika with AI in Tomo: A wellness journey that goes beyond the boundaries of conventional psychotherapy.

AI companionship company Replika has partnered with the team behind the AI dating simulator Blush to launch Tomo, a wellness and meditation app with guidance from an AI-generated avatar. It’s the kind of concept that seemed destined to happen once genetic AI took over, but during my time with Tomo, I found myself wondering if I could ever open up to an AI like I do to a real therapist.

Tomo, now generally available in the Apple iOS store, takes users to a virtual island of rest, greeted by an AI-generated guide named Tomo. Tomo offers programs that help people explore their personal growth, psychological well-being, and fulfillment. It also provides guided meditation, yoga, strength training, and, best of all, talk therapy.

Users can try Tomo for free for three days, after which they must choose between paying $7.99 per week or $49.99 per year.

During the experience with Tomo, the avatar simulated a conversation with a therapist, following development programs that combine Eastern and Western practices. Although the experience was reminiscent of a text-based conversation with a therapist, the personal preference for conversation without typing remained.

After the initial chat, users can explore various activities on the island. Tomo’s programs cover topics such as work-life balance, motivation, and sleep improvement, with modules that take two weeks to a month to complete. Users can then unlock 3D objects that encourage exploration of their inner space.

Alongside the program modules, users can explore other activities on the island. Unfortunately, the experience with Tomo, the avatar guide, didn’t deviate much from the usual chatbot conversation. The guided meditations provide useful guidance, but the app doesn’t offer the depth that some users are interested in. The use of AI in mental health treatment continues to raise privacy concerns, and while Replika claims that Tomo is taking precautions, the issue remains controversial.

The app is limited to iPhones, with an Android version expected later this year. Replika also plans to release an app on Apple's Vision Pro, paving the way for even more introspective Tomo-guided meditation.
