A new technology based on artificial intelligence (AI) that is able to detect weapons through securityis now available for free to schools.
Iterate.ai , the company behind this technology , originally built it for a client who was having trouble with armed robberies in their stores. However, the company soon realized that this technology could be a useful tool for detecting weapons in schools, using the security cameras that are already in place.
“It will connect to existing cameras, take that footage from the cameras and look for weapons, people carrying weapons, or people wearing Kevlar body armor,” said Brian Sathianathan, the co-founder and chief technology officer at Iterate.

Now the company has made the technology open sourced, meaning schools, churches, community centers can download and use the AI for free.
“Over time we realized that there was a lot more gun violence in schools and schools needed help,” Sathianathan said.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, from 2000 to 2021, 108 people were killed and another 168 were seriously injured due to shootings in elementary and secondary schools.
Iterate.ai hopes its technology will help the community fight gun violence, and it believes that as artificial intelligence evolves and becomes more widespread, things will get better.

Weapon detection technology is available for those interested in implementing it.
“We encourage everyone to continue to contribute to this and make changes, make additions,” Sathianathan said.
Other measures to protect against gun attacks in schools
One of the main security measures used to protect students in schools is to enhance physical security. This includes installing sturdy doors and windows, installing security cameras, and monitoring school entrances and exits.

Additionally, school authorities can implement training programs for students and school staff , so that they are aware of safety procedures and can react effectively in case of danger.
